This month’s lead article is a series of pieces exploring a fabulous book I just read, Slim By Design. The premise is one supported by years of research on eating behaviors: People are more successful in changing behaviors by modifying their environment, rather than relying on willpower alone. The book includes a whole section on easy, cheap, fast changes families, schools, and workplaces can make to help people control their weight “mindlessly” – with minimal extra effort and no extra willpower. I have been a huge fan of Dr. Wansink’s for a long time, largely because all of his advice is evidence-based. Every item on his 100-point list here has experimental data to back it up as having a real, significant effect on people’s eating habits and weight. It’s a brilliant way to approach both lifestyle changes and wellness programs to make sure our efforts have the most impact. I’m planning to share his 10-point version (found here: http://www.slimbydesign.org/wp-content/home-resources/092114-sbd-home-scorecard.pdf) with my patients to support them in their own weight-loss efforts.
