January 2017, Volume 6, Issue 1

Happy New Year, SynerLINK Friends,

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season, and thank you for your patience while the newsletter was on hiatus during my time overseas. I had an amazing experience, and I am also very happy to be home with the friends, family, and communities I care about.

The big news this issue is that I wrote this month’s lead article! It’s an evidence-based review of integrative mental health treatments for perinatal depression – the depression that strikes women during pregnancy or post-partum. It was written with my lovely colleague and fellow women’s mental health expert, Dr. Janet Settle, and I’m really happy about how it turned out.

The key point I wanted to make is that perinatal depression has many natural, safe, and affordable treatment options that can be used alone or in conjunction with medication treatment. The treatment plan really needs to be individualized to each woman, and can’t be a “cookie cutter” approach. Everyone recovers in their own way, with the supports and techniques that fit for them. It’s our job as doctors, and her job as the patient, to work together to find that ideal combination for each woman. I hope you enjoy the article!

And, our quote of the month honors an amazingly strong woman and tireless advocate for reducing the stigma of mental health, lost much too soon in 2016. Continue reading “January 2017, Volume 6, Issue 1”

May 2015, Volume 5, Issue 5

Happy May, SynerLINK friends,

We have several pieces of big news coming up here at SynerGenius!

First, is that I am getting married later this month, so the next newsletter you receive will be signed Chanel Heermann MD.  Since most people already know me as Dr. Chanel, anyhow, this shouldn’t affect too much for my subscribers.

Second, I am preparing to leave this summer for a year in New Zealand.  I am extremely grateful and excited!  What this means to you is that SynerLINK will be going on hiatus until at least fall of 2016.  I may send out an occasional newsletter when I feel moved to do so, but it will not be a monthly offering anymore, to allow me sufficient time and space to immerse myself in the Kiwi culture and really embrace the experience.  Thank you so much for understanding!

This month’s lead article is a series of pieces on the depression-inflammation link.  This is such an important development and represents a truly new approach to mental health treatment that I expect will change many lives over the coming years.

April 2015, Volume 5, Issue 4

Happy April, SynerLINK friends,

This month’s lead article is a series of pieces exploring a fabulous book I just read, Slim By Design. The premise is one supported by years of research on eating behaviors: People are more successful in changing behaviors by modifying their environment, rather than relying on willpower alone.  The book includes a whole section on easy, cheap, fast changes families, schools, and workplaces can make to help people control their weight “mindlessly” – with minimal extra effort and no extra willpower.  I have been a huge fan of Dr. Wansink’s for a long time, largely because all of his advice is evidence-based.  Every item on his 100-point list here has experimental data to back it up as having a real, significant effect on people’s eating habits and weight.  It’s a brilliant way to approach both lifestyle changes and wellness programs to make sure our efforts have the most impact.  I’m planning to share his 10-point version (found here: http://www.slimbydesign.org/wp-content/home-resources/092114-sbd-home-scorecard.pdf) with my patients to support them in their own weight-loss efforts.

March 2015, Volume 5, Issue 3

Happy March, SynerLINK friends,

We have exciting news here at SynerGenius this month!  I’m so proud to be one of the first 121 physicians in the world certified by the American Board of Integrative Medicine. ABPS is one of the two governing boards that certify all medical specialties and I am pleased by their recognition of IM as a legitimate and important medical specialty. So, our article of the month is trio of articles that explain what this development means for the future of health care.

February 2015, Volume 5, Issue 2

Happy February, SynerLINK friends,

This month’s  top article is hands-down the best thing I’ve read this year.  I am becoming a huge fan of Glennon at Momastery and her joyful approach to life.  This month, I am grateful for her gift of perspectacles on my own life.  What can you be grateful for in your life, right now?

Happy New Year, SynerLINK friends,

This month’s lead article is a great piece that both dispels the myths about behavior change and offers science-based tips for making lifestyle improvements.  Bottom line:  Self-care is a marathon, not a sprint.

December 2014, Volume 4, Issue 12

Happy December, SynerLINK friends,

This month’s lead article is an important piece on a concept I’ve heard referred to as “FOMO” – fear of missing out.  Busy-ness is not good for us, and it’s not good for kids, either.  This holiday season, I’m going to focus my attention on the things we’ve consciously chosen to include in our lives, instead of the things we’re “missing” by having made those choices.  Will you join me?

November 2014, Volume 4, Issue 11

Happy November, SynerLINK friends,

I really love this month’s lead article.  Our own health and happiness truly start at home — positive family relationships contribute to health, while strained relationships are health risks.  This article describes a simple and elegant way to create family connection over the dinner table.  I’m looking forward to using this at our house.

Happy October, SynerLINK friends,

This month’s lead is a beautiful, powerful video that left me speechless.  It explores all that we give up when we let technology rule our lives.  Look up.  What are you missing?

September 2014, Volume 4, Issue 9

Happy September, SynerLINK friends,

As the school year begins for many of our families, I believe it’s important to reflect on consciously on the choices they are making and how they impact our well-being.  This month’s lead article challenges some of our assumptions about our lifestyle, the choices available to us, and how busy we really are.  How would our days be different if we simply did one thing after another?

Colorado community members – Don’t miss my upcoming free talk on the 7 Foundations of Health and Happiness.  I’ll be speaking to the Northwest Metro chapter of Colorado Business and Professional Women this Wednesday, September 3rd at 6pm, at the Kokopelli Beer Company, 8931 Harlan Street in Westminster.  Hope to see you there!
